Western Horseman Magazine named the top 5 rodeo horses of the decade in the following timed events: tie-down roping, heading, heeling, steer wrestling, and barrel racing. These horses were chosen according to their amazing performances in the rodeo arena. These horses are considered to be the most memorable performers of this century’s first decade.
Topofthemarket, aka Topper, an 1982 sorrel gelding was named the top tie-down roping horse of the decade. His breeder was Billy Cole from Wichita Falls, Texas and his owner was Stran Smith from Childress, Texas. Topper was considered to be one of those horses who come along once in a life time. Smith bought Topper when he was 21 years old, and at first was merely just a practice horse. Throughout the day’s that Smith owned him, Topper was considered to be not only a pet but also a member of the family. Sadly Topper’s life was ended in 2007 when he had gotten out on the road and was struck by a truck.
